50th Anniversary of the Geneva Conventions

Date of Issue (August 12, 1999)

The first "Geneva Convention" (conditions of the wounded in the field) was adopted in 1864. This was followed by important developments in 1907 (protection of combatants wounded at sea), 1929 (protection of prisoners of war). On August 12, 1949 the four Geneva conventions were adopted for the protection of wounded and sick in both armed forces and civilians. In 1977 two more protocols were added to the 1949 Geneva Conventions. Combined together they form the core of International humanitarian law today.
