On
October 9, 1874 the Treaty of Berne, establishing the "General
Postal Union" was signed by the representatives of twenty two
nations. The Treaty of Berne unified a conflicting international maze
of postal services and regulations into a single postal territory
for the reciprocal exchange of letter post items. Within the single
postal territory the freedom of transit of letter post item was guaranteed
and multitude of rates for mail were reduced to a single rate. |
